About the Mikumi National Park:

It is a national park near Morogoro, Tanzania and is the fourth largest in the country. The park has the open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain. The park is very much accessible by surfaced road from Dar es Salaam and is suitable for a weekend getaway from there. The 80% of Mikumi southeast is inaccessible to the tourists and there is just one road circuit which the tourists can access. The Guided Walks are also available.

The grasslands of Mikumi support wildlife like, the large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, etc. Animals like Giraffe and elephant are occasionally seen too. Predators, like lions and spotted hyena are present but are very rarely seen.

Best time to Visit:

June to October is considered as the best time to visit the Mikumi National Park. This being the dry season is less prone to mosquitoes and has abundant sunshine and little rainfall. The Wildlife is easier to spot as they concentrate around water holes and rivers. Good sights of less common antelopes like eland, sable, etc, is expected while from November to may, due to the wet season, Roads may be washed out and troublesome to use. The prices may be less due to the off-season but wildlife is rare to spot but the Birding is at its best as migratory birds arrive. Also, animals are scattered during the wet season and some lodges are closed from March to May. It gets too humid and hot during this season.
